Puppy Socialization Class starting 17 January 2026

Six week session - Saturdays starting 17 January 2026 at 2 pm at WindReach, Warwick
Introductory Lecture (included in price) - Sunday 11 January 2026 at 3:30 pm at Peace Lutheran Church Hall, Paget (humans only) - open to the public

The first 6 months of your puppy’s life is an important developmental period where they learn what it is to be a dog and how to live in a human household.  Thankfully, they are sponges during this time as they need to assimilate vast amounts of information on human and dog body language, house etiquette, bathroom rules, controlling their bite, how to play with humans and dogs, the strange things groomers and vets like to do, and the list goes on.

Our hope is to start you off on the right ‘paw’ with your puppy!   We will discuss biting and chewing, socialization, understanding your puppy’s body language, how dogs learn and how to build a rewarding relationship with your puppy.  A majority of the class will be on lead with short, managed off lead play sessions toward the end of each class.  To me it is the most important class I teach as it is now that we can have the greatest impact on your puppy’s training and behaviour.  The earlier you begin training for both you and your puppy and develop a relationship built on trust, the easier the transition through the adolescent to adult stage will be for you both.

Puppy class covers important core life skill concepts to help prepare you and your puppy for adolescence and a happy lifelong relationship.  These concepts underlie everything you do with your puppy throughout their life.  Having a basic understanding of them will improve your relationship, your puppy’s socialization and training and help you prevent behavioural issues or give you the tools to address them.

Along with the in person classes, this course includes an extensive online library with handouts and videos to help you learn and practice at home.

As we are paying rent and tend to be fully subscribed, we are not able to offer credits or make up sessions for missed classes.

Super Puppy / Adolescent Angst starting 17 January 2026

Six week session- Saturdays starting 17 January 2026 at 3:30 pm at WindReach, Warwick
Introductory Lecture (included in price): Sunday 18 January 2026 3:30 pm at Peace Lutheran Church Hall, Paget (humans only) - open to the public

On their way from puppy to adult, your dog moves through adolescence and much like in humans, in can be an incredibly trying time for guardians. It can begin anywhere after 5 months and last up to 24 months depending on your dog.

Hormones play a huge role in this process but even if your dog is spayed or neutered, they will still show aspects of this developmental stage. This can be a challenging time as they seemingly ‘forget’ things you taught them as puppies.

Patience and consistency are especially important. Though they look like adults, adolescent dogs are still socially immature, have short attention spans and may lack impulse control. Continued socialization is key but it may have to be modified depending on your dog's particular needs. It can also be the time when we start to see reactivity, a decreasing acceptance of other dogs or a resurgence of fear.  Understanding body language and the science behind how learning happens will help you cross this stormy sea.

In class you will learn:

Dog body language to improve your training and prevent or lessen behaviour issues.
Why your dog is chewing or mouthing and how to manage and redirect it.
How dogs learn to help you teach or advance behaviours like sit, down, stays, come when called and walk on lead using reward-based training methods.
How to continue your dog’s socialization and handling.
Handling techniques for walking, harnessing, vets and groomers.
Troubleshooting issues like jumping up, counter surfing and reactivity.

If your dog is very vocal or reactive around other dogs, please reach out prior to registering to determine if this class is the best fit for you and your dog. A private session, online version of the course or auditing the class and working on material at home may be a better way to begin.
