Pawsitive Puppy’s goal is to bring positive reinforcement training and relationship building to pet dog owners from puppy socialization to adult dog classes and behavioural consultations.
Pawsitive Puppy and Pawsitive Dog Training began in Bermuda in 2007. My mentor, Jane Taylor, who had taught puppy classes on the island for close to 20 years ran the puppy classes and I worked with older dogs. When she decided to return home to balmy Wales, I was honored to have the puppy training torch passed to me. I decided to simply go by Pawsitive Puppy.
The beginning of my dog training career had been spent working with shelter dogs, behaviour issues and dogs that had spent months and years rehearsing behaviour patterns that their owners were now desperate to change. I had began studying and then teaching because of my own difficult history with my dogs.
I was ready to play with puppies. Not only because I needed an oxytocin injection but also because I felt like I had gained enough experience to begin my path in puppy training. To me, since the puppy stage is such a pivotal moment in a dog’s life and a majority of people bringing puppies to class will be new dog owners, puppy socialization classes should have the most experienced instructors.
I shadowed Jane for many years in puppy class before I began teaching. Of all the classes I teach, this is the most important. It is here that intervention can have the most impact on possible behavioural issues. Here, we have an opportunity to help new owners understand their puppy’s body language and learning style to start off on the right training path with their new family member.
